Paying participants – What is everyone else doing? And why it should matter
October 18, 12 - 1 p.m. Eastern
Join the DIA Bioethics Community for our next community meeting on the perennially challenging topic of payments to research participants. Kelly Fitzgerald and Donna Libretti-Cooke (see bios below) will discuss their recent paper and explore what we can learn from looking at payment practices from a database of thousands of research protocols over the last 5 years.
Discussion will include:
- The industry needs alignment and consistency on terminology of payment categories to better gauge the categories of payments being provided. Better alignment will help clarify whether sponsors are providing reimbursement of expenses, compensation to cover time, effort, burden and inconvenience to patients and caregivers, and/or financial incentives for enrollment/participation. Better understanding will also help assess how effective payments are in lowering financial barriers to participation.
- While data shows there are participant payments happening in oncology trials, the payment amounts are much lower than other therapeutic areas. Why is this? Does it reflect outdated practices or thinking around avoiding payment in “treatment” studies?
- ‘Completion Bonuses’ can sometimes be allowed in research, depending how they are set up- we’ll talk about how and when they can be used and how to structure them to prevent concerns of undue inducement.
